The first real cryptocurrency as we know it, launched on Jan. 3, 2009. While its value has climbed steadily since then, it has seen wild fluctuations. It's used for crypto market sentiment and a sign of were the market may be headed. A lot of the time if Bitcoin is up then other crypto are up as well.
